  • What if the drawing doesn’t look like my child?

You’ll see their illustrated character before the story is made. You can try another drawing or upload a different photo before approving it. You also see every page before you pay.

  • How is the book personalized?

You upload a clear photo of the hero and choose a story. We draw them once in that book’s house style and ask whether it looks like them. If it doesn’t, we can draw it again twice, or you can send a different photo. Only after you say yes do we illustrate the pages, into a story written by people. You read the whole book free and approve it before anything is printed.

Their name, their age band, three things they love, and who else is in the book. You can edit the words on any page while you’re making the book, and change the cover text and the dedication right up until you order it.

  • Can I check and change the book before I buy?

Yes. See every page, edit the story’s words, and change the cover text and dedication before you pay. Once you place your order, the book is final and we can’t make changes.

  • Size and binding

Every story has 30 pages. Choose a digital edition to read on screen, or a softcover or hardcover to hold and keep. Printed books are 206 × 206 mm square.

  • Shipping and delivery times

Printed books are made and posted in 5–7 days. That is the time before dispatch; delivery takes additional time and depends on your address. Shipping is quoted at checkout. For free standard shipping on your first hardcover, sign up at the bottom of this page and we’ll email you a code.

A look inside

A little of the adventure you’ll share.

  • Grown-ups love asking one question: what do you want to be when you grow up? Arlo had never been sure. So this morning, over breakfast, Arlo made a plan: try every job there is, before bedtime.

  • At eight o'clock, Arlo was a chef. The first pancake flipped beautifully. The second flipped so high it stuck to the ceiling for a moment, then dropped back into the pan as if it had meant to. Waffles waited below, hoping for a third.

  • 'All of them,' said Arlo. It seemed the only sensible answer. Then Arlo yawned, closed both eyes, and dreamed of pancakes and planets and football, and of all the things there was still time to be.

A book you make together. A story they can keep.

About this story

One day, every job there is, and the only sensible answer

Grown-ups always ask what they want to be. So the hero tries every job before bedtime: chef at eight o'clock, then vet, builder, explorer, postal worker, musician, inventor and astronaut, and arrives at the only sensible answer.

The hero is drawn into all thirteen spreads, told at their reading level: 2–4, 4–6 or 6–8. Choose up to three things they love and add a pet, and each one turns up during the day.
